Salutations from the Shadows,

All summer long, we’ve been navigating through Cold War Moscow, learning the unwritten rules that kept CIA operatives alive in the most surveilled city on earth.

We last talked about blending in. About how the best protection is often invisibility. You don’t want to be the one people remember. You don’t want to be the one that made an impression. You want to be the one they can’t quite describe from memory.

But once you know how to disappear, you also need to learn when to be seen. This is the art of controlled contrast, the ability to stand out on your terms and for your benefit, without exposing yourself to unnecessary risk.

A CIA officer in Cold War Moscow didn’t try to look like a local. That would have been suspicious, not stealthy. You couldn’t pass for one if you tried.

What you could do, though, was blend in as a diplomat, a businessman, or a tourist. You adopted a believable cover identity, and then you lived it naturally.

But sometimes, you'll need to break out a little.
