People say all kinds of things that are not true.

Sometimes they mean to lie. Sometimes they are protecting themselves. Sometimes they are trying to sound polite, reasonable, calm, interested, confident, or unbothered. Sometimes they are just saying what fits the moment. Whatever the reason, words alone are a bad place to stop if you are trying to understand what is really happening.

Behavior usually tells the truth first.
